Short Story Competition

The Tamar Valley Short Story Competition is a short fiction competition that encourages entries from across Australia for its Open Section. You could win $1500 cash, mentorships, Petrarch’s gift vouchers, or the inaugural Adam Thompson ‘New Voice” Award! Grades 5-12 sections are open ONLY to Tasmanian students.

THEME: The Good Life with a Tasmanian vibe


Short fiction stories of 2000 words maximum. All ages eligible.

$1500 prize money and mentorship in “Editing to get published” courtesy of Affirm Press.

GRADE 10-12 STUDENTS – free to enter

Short fiction of 1500 words maximum. 

$150 cash prize courtesy of TVWF and $100 gift voucher courtesy of the Children’s Book Council Australia.

GRADE 7-9 STUDENTS – free to enter

Short fiction of 1000 words maximum; $100 cash prize courtesy of TVWF and $50 gift voucher courtesy of the Children’s Book Council Australia.

GRADES 5-6 STUDENTS – free to enter  

Short fiction of 500 words maximum.

$50 cash prize and $50 gift voucher courtesy of the Children’s Book Council Australia. 

PLUS…. all open section entries and stories submitted by Grade 10-12 students will be eligible for the inaugural Adam Thompson New Voice” Award. The winner of this award will receive $500 in cash and mentorship with author Adam Thompson. 

This award will be proudly presented by the TVWF Board in recognition of “outstanding” creative writing. The Award is so named in recognition of Adam Thompson, who won the inaugural TVWF Short Story competition in 2014. Adam is an Aboriginal (pakana) writer who lives in Launceston, and writes contemporary fiction. His debut book of short stories, called Born Into This, was released in 2021 and has been shortlisted for the USQ Steele Rudd Award for a Short Story Collection, the 2021 Age Book of the Year Award and earlier this year won the international Story Prize: Spotlight Award.

*Entries close for all sections at 5.30pm on Thursday, June 30. Winners will be announced at the Tamar Valley Writers Festival in mid-October. 

** Finalists and winning entries will be published in the Young Tasmania section on the Forty South Tasmania website.

What are the competition rules?

  • The Grades 5-12 sections are open ONLY to Tasmanian students
  • There is a limit of one entry per student or entrant.
  • The entry must be the original work of the entrant, must be unpublished and not have won a prize previously
  • Entries must comply with the required and clearly specified maximum word count: 

a) Grades 5-6 is 500 words maximum

b) Grades 7-9 is 1000 words maximum

c) Grades 10-12 is 1500 words maximum  

d) OPEN section is 2000 words maximum

  • The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. 


Payment is only required by those submitting entries in the OPEN SECTION. Please pay $25 per entry by direct debit to the Tamar Valley Writers Festival, Account number:  187 803 309 BSB: 633 000.

Payment can also be made by cheque/money order made out to Tamar Valley Writers Festival and mailed to PO Box 5306, Launceston, Tasmania, 7250.

Winners and prizes

Winners of the Student Sections will be notified and receive their prizes during Book Week 2022, August 20-26. The Open Section and Adam Thompson ‘New Voice” Award will be announced and presented during the TVWF Writers Festival, October 13-17.
